Akpabio Urges West African Leaders to Embrace Unity, Tackle Economic and Security Challenges

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has urged West African leaders to deepen regional integration, confront economic and security challenges head-on, and embrace a renewed vision of unity.

Akpabio made the call at the opening of the First Ordinary of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja.

Addressing an audience that included the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Memounatou Ibrahima, members of parliament, diplomats, and other dignitaries, Akpabio said the region stands at a defining moment in its history.

Addressing economic concerns, the Senate President highlighted persistent obstacles to growth, including inflation, currency instability, and limited intra-regional trade. He championed the pursuit of a unified regional currency as a key step toward economic transformation.

He urged the region to “break free from outdated, fragmented approaches and embrace a truly integrated financial system that reflects the realities of the interconnected economies. Akpabio also warned that economic reform alone would not suffice without peace and good governance.
