The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies has issued a stern rebuke to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over widespread irregularities and operational failures during the 2025 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
During an investigative hearing at the National Assembly, lawmakers took turns grilling the Head of WAEC Nigeria, Dr Amos Dangut, over what they described as serious lapses that have undermined public confidence in the country’s examination system.
In his opening remarks, Chairman of the Committee, Oforji Oboku, criticised WAEC’s handling of the examination and apologised to Nigerian parents, guardians, and students who endured the chaos. He also commended his colleagues for attending the oversight session despite the National Assembly being on recess.
Dr Dangut defended the council’s performance, citing unforeseen logistical challenges and insecurity in parts of the country. However, his explanations were frequently interrupted by lawmakers, who rejected the excuses as insufficient and unacceptable.
Following the heated session, the committee passed a resolution mandating WAEC to provide a full audit of its digital infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas, and to submit a clear roadmap on its readiness for computer-based testing (CBT). The committee also directed WAEC to submit its full operational guidelines and all reports related to examination paper leakages.
