INEC estimates 5.4m voters at Imo, Kogi and Bayelsa off-cycle governorship elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission anticipates that 5.4m voters will participate in the three state-wide governorship elections scheduled to take place on November 11.

1.05m voters are expected to participate in the Bayelsa election, 2.4m in the Imo election, and 2.2m in the Kogi election.

National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s information and voter education committee, Mr. Sam Olawale, said in Abuja on Tuesday that INEC’s preparations for the election were reviewed on Tuesday.

Olawale said that electronic copies will be distributed to the state chairmen or their representatives of the parties involved in the election.

He noted that 16 of the 16 political parties sponsoring candidates for Bayelsa governorship, 17 of the 17 for Imo governorship, and 18 of the 18 for Kogi governorship.

Olawale said that state chairmen of the parties would be invited to present the registers on October 12 at 10 a.m. each day at INEC’s offices in Lagos, Lokoja and Owerri, as well as Yenagoa.

He said that INEC has completed mock accreditation for the three states, in line with its commitment to have improved accreditation and results management.

The mock exercise, Olumekun said, will be held simultaneously in all three states on Saturday, October 14, from 8.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. He added that the list of designated voting units for each state had already been uploaded on INEC’s website and social media.

Olumekun also said that the lessons learned from the mock exercise would be taken into account to ensure the smooth implementation of the BVAS system and the IReV system on Election Day. He urged registered voters in the designated polling units to present their Permanent Voter Cards during the mock exercise.
