Supreme Court Upholds Dr. Alex Otti’s Victory in Abia State Governorship Election

Abia State, Nigeria, pulsated with jubilation on January 12, 2024, as the Supreme Court upheld the victory of Dr. Alex Otti in the March 18 governorship election, solidifying his mandate. With this ruling, spontaneous festivities erupted across the state capital, Umuahia, and the commercial hub, Aba, as people from all walks of life joined in the celebration.

Unfettered joy was the order of the day as supporters, residents, and even non-members of Otti’s Labour Party took part in the celebrations. Public places swarmed with people discussing the verdict, as party lines blurred in the face of this momentous occasion. Free drinks flowed, free rides were offered, and thanksgiving church services were organized, painting a vibrant picture of unity and happiness.

Amidst the widespread euphoria, Governor Otti addressed a crowd in Aba, outlining his plans for the development of the area. He announced the awarding of road construction contracts and measures to address persistent flooding issues, signaling his commitment to ameliorating the state’s infrastructural challenges. Otti also took the opportunity to express gratitude to the electorate and the judiciary for their steadfast support.

The Supreme Court’s decision underscored the necessity of demonstrating substantial non-compliance in election matters, thereby setting a significant precedent. It curtailed the court’s intervention in internal party affairs, dismissing the appellants’ challenges as frivolous. Otti, with an impressive lead of 175,466 votes, emerged as the indisputable winner. The ruling also addressed the contentious vote count in Obingwa LGA, which had been manipulated in previous elections to favor the PDP but was thwarted this time around.

In the aftermath of this landmark ruling, Dr. Otti expressed his profound gratitude to the judiciary, the Labour Party, INEC, and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for their roles in safeguarding a just process and the independence of the judiciary. This victory, it seems, is more than a personal triumph for Otti – it is a symbol of hope for the people of Abia State, an affirmation of democratic values and a step forward for political transparency in Nigeria.
