‘Politics must never be a literal battlefield’ – Biden addresses nation after Trump assassination attempt

U.S. President Joe Biden addressed the Americans after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, asking them to lower the political temperature.

“Thankfully, former President Trump is not seriously injured.  I spoke with him last night.  I’m grateful he’s doing well,” Biden said, also extending his deepest condolences to the family of the victim who was killed.

The attendee of the rally in Pennsylvania was a volunteer firefighter, who sheltered his family from those bullets. Biden called him a “hero”.

“We can’t allow this violence to be normalized. You know, the political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated.  It’s time to cool it down.  And we all have a responsibility to do that,” Biden said.

He also admitted that he and Trump had “strong disagreements” which are inevitable in American democracy.

“But politics must never be a literal battlefield and, God forbid, a killing field,” Biden said, adding that in America differences are solved at the ballot box, not with bullets.

The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump took place at a rally in Pennsylvania on June 13. The FBI has identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The former president was seen with blood on his right ear and cheek as he was rushed off the stage. One attendee was killed and two more were injured. The shooter was killed by law enforcement officers.
