Flood: NIHSA urges Nigerians living along Rivers Niger, Benue basins to move away

Amid the heavy rainfall witnessed across parts of the country in recent days, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has raised the alarm of an impending massive flooding of the basins of two major rivers.

The Agency has therefore urged Nigerians living along the basins of both Rivers Niger and Benue to move away quickly from the Rivers’ banks for their own safety.

Director General of the Agency, Umar Ibrahim Mohammed who stated this in a statement, on Thursday, specifically urged citizens living along the River Benue Basin
“to quickly move away from the river banks as increased water on the river Benue has reached the flooding level due to increased rainfall”.

He also urged those along the River Niger “to move to a safe location as the managements of Kainji and Jebba Dams are working to control the floodwaters”, suggesting that massive waters would be released from the two dams.

The Agency also urged those likely to be affected by the flooding to continue to cooperate with the Emergency Management Agencies and work together in order to collectively build resilience against flooding in Nigeria and minimize the after effects of the flood.
