The Senate has urged the National Judicial Council to resolve the purported removal of Benue Chief Judge, Justice Maurice Ikpambese, in line with constitutional provisions.
It also urged its Committee on Judiciary and Human Rights to investigate the matter and report back in two weeks.
Reports say that the resolutions followed the adoption of a motion at plenary in Abuja. According to reports, the motion was sponsored by the Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP-Benue), and two other senators from the state.
Moro, who moved the motion under matters of urgent national importance, said the National Assembly had the responsibility as the highest law-making body in Nigeria to protect and preserve the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
According to him, it is the responsibility of the national assembly to ensure compliance and prevent violations, while ensuring that the constitution remains the supreme law of the land. The senator said that the crisis stemmed from the purported removal of the chief judge by the state House of Assembly allegedly without recourse to the tenets of the law.
