Public urged to maintain proper dental hygiene as World Oral Health Day is marked

As Nigeria joins the world to mark World Oral Health Day today, with the theme ‘A Happy Mouth is a Happy Mind’, individuals, communities, and governments have been encouraged to recognize the importance of oral health and adopt preventative measures against oral diseases, which remain a significant global health challenge.

Speaking with Spectrum Television, a dentist, Toluwanimi Fatokun described oral health to be the condition of the teeth and the supporting structures like the gum, the bone, the tongue and the oral cavity in general. She also added that maintaining proper oral hygiene not only helps prevent cavities and gum disease but is also linked to the prevention of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and even certain cancers. She further debunked some of the myths about dental health, to be “brushing hard” and “going to the dentist are for rich people”.

Fatokun further highlighted the role that diet plays in maintaining a healthy gum and order structures in the teeth, emphasizing on the early signs of gum disease and common mistakes people make when brushing or flossing and how it can be prevented.

The dentist also urged individuals to take responsibility for their health by focusing on balanced diets, brushing properly and seeking professional advice about their gum when necessary, adding that oral health is more than just a smile; it is an integral part of the overall health.

World Oral Health Day observed annually on 20th March, is set aside to raise awareness of the issues around oral health and the importance of oral hygiene so that governments, health associations and the general public can work together to achieve healthier mouths and happier lives.
