The world of football is in mourning following the shock deaths of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother in a car crash in Spain.
Jota, 28, and André Silva, 26, lost their lives in a crash in Zamora near Spain’s north-west border with Portugal early on Thursday. Silva played for Liga Portugal 2 side Penafiel.
The tragedy comes just 11 days after Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso.
The couple had been together since 2012 and have three children together. The Liverpool star proposed to Ms Cardosa in July 2022 in a picturesque lakeside setting.
In a joint Instagram post a few days ago, Jota and Ms Cardosa shared pictures from the church wedding ceremony, which took place on June 22.
Alongside the pictures, Ms Cardosa wrote: “Sim, para sempre (Yes, forever)”.
On Wednesday, Jota and Cardoso, 28, posted video footage of their wedding, with the caption: “A day we will never forget.”
Jota replied in the comments: “I’m the lucky one.”
The crash happened just after midnight on Thursday morning on the A-52 close to Spain’s north-west border with Portugal.
It was reported that the Liverpool star and his brother were in a Lamborghini at the time of the crash. A tyre is believed to have blown out while overtaking, causing the supercar to come off the road, crash and then burst into flames.
It was not immediately clear who was driving.
Firefighters, paramedics and police rushed to the scene but could do nothing to save their lives.
Portuguese press are reporting Diogo’s brother got married last week.
Diogo Jota helped Liverpool win the Premier League last season and also won the FA Cup and League Cup with the Merseyside team.
