US to Impose 25% Tariff on South Korea and Japan from August 1 – Trump Issues Warning

The United States is set to impose a 25 percent tariff on imports from South Korea and Japan starting August 1, following the expiration of a 90-day freeze on aggressive trade actions.

Former President Donald Trump confirmed the decision via social media, publishing formal letters addressed to both countries. He warned that the tariffs could increase—potentially reaching 35 percent for Japan—if no trade deal is finalised before the negotiation deadline of July 9.

While talks with both governments are ongoing, Trump indicated that the U.S. would no longer tolerate what he described as “unfair trade advantages.” He also hinted that similar tariff measures could be extended to other countries, even where interim agreements currently exist.

The announcement has raised fresh concerns among global trade partners and could significantly impact U.S. economic relations in the Asia-Pacific region.
