The Federal Government has issued a serious warning as heavy rainfall threatens to cause flooding across 11 states in Nigeria.
The National Flood Early Warning Centre, under the Ministry of Environment’s Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department, forecast potential flooding in 38 locations, with rains expected to persist until Sunday, July 20, 2025.
Affected states include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Borno, Bauchi, Plateau, Yobe, Katsina, Kano, Cross River, and Zamfara.
This alert comes alongside the government’s recent push to establish a National Flood Insurance Policy aimed at proactively addressing Nigeria’s growing flood risks.
At a technical committee meeting in Abuja in June, Mahmud Kambari, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, labelled the rising flood incidents a national emergency requiring immediate, decisive action. He emphasized the need to shift from reactive responses to sustainable, proactive flood risk management, with the insurance program being key to long-term resilience.
