President Bola Tinubu has announced that the University of Maiduguri will be renamed in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made during an expanded meeting of the Federal Executive Council, where President Tinubu paid tribute to Buhari, describing him as a leader defined by discipline, moral fortitude, and unwavering patriotism.
While acknowledging that Buhari’s legacy may spark debate, Tinubu stressed that the former president’s integrity and the values he upheld in public service will remain enduring symbols of leadership in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Reflecting on their political partnership, Tinubu recounted their pivotal role in the historic 2015 elections, which marked the country’s first peaceful democratic transfer of power from one ruling party to another.
According to the President, renaming the University of Maiduguri after Buhari serves not only as a lasting institutional tribute but also as a symbolic and strategic gesture. He noted that the university is situated in a region that endured significant hardship during Nigeria’s fight against insurgency — a struggle Buhari actively addressed during his tenure.
President Tinubu said the decision would ensure that Buhari’s name and values remain firmly rooted in the fabric of national memory, particularly in the region that most witnessed his leadership’s security impact.
