Starting at midnight on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, nurses in federal health institutions across Nigeria began a seven‑day warning strike, following the expiry of a 15‑day ultimatum to the federal government
Organized by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM‑FHI), the strike involves the complete withdrawal of services in all federal hospitals—including teaching hospitals, federal medical centres, specialist hospitals, and clinics—in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
With nursing professionals representing up to 60–70% of hospital service delivery, the action is expected to severely disrupt essential services ranging from emergency care to surgeries and maternal health.
The strike follows failed negotiations over key demands, including improved allowances for night shifts, weekend work, and on‑call duty; increased staffing; creation of a Department of Nursing under the Federal Ministry of Health; and elevated welfare measures .
NANNM leaders have warned that if their concerns are not addressed, they may escalate to an indefinite strike after issuing a further 21‑day notice in accordance with labor regulations.
