Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has expressed deep concern over the worsening economic conditions in the country, saying what troubles her most is the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Channels Television’s Amazing Africans, Adichie noted that the ongoing hardship has pushed many formerly stable middle-class Nigerians into poverty and desperation.
“Life has become so hard in Nigeria, and I can see it. People who were once comfortably middle class—not that life was easy, but they managed—are now begging and in serious need. That worries me deeply,” she said.
Adichie emphasised that the most meaningful political assessment lies in how well ordinary citizens are coping, rather than in economic figures or market indicators.
“I don’t really care about things like the stock market. What matters to me is how the person earning minimum wage is surviving in this economy. The suffering is what disturbs me most. And it’s terrible,” she added.
