The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has disclosed that 69,376 Nigerians pre-registered online within the first seven hours of its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, exercise which commenced yesterday.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, confirmed the figures in a statement, noting that of the total registrations recorded, 33,803 (48.7 percent) were male while 35,573 (51.3 percent) were female. He added that young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 34 years accounted for 48,033 (69.2 percent) of the fresh registrations.

Olumekun explained that the online registration portal would remain open round the clock throughout the exercise, while the in-person option would begin on August 25, 2025, at the Commission’s 811 state and local government offices across the country.

He further reminded the public that voter registration is strictly for Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above who have never registered before, stressing that double or multiple registrations remain illegal.

The Commission, however, assured that requests for transfers of voter details across states, as well as the replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards, would also be accommodated during the CVR period.
