Tinubu Demands Permanent UN Security Council Seats for Africa

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renewed calls for reforms at the United Nations, urging the global body to grant Africa permanent representation on the Security Council.

Speaking at the plenary session on peace and stability during the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan, Tinubu insisted that the continent deserves at least two permanent seats with full privileges. He added that Africa should also be allocated additional non-permanent seats, in line with the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.

The President used the forum to commend the Nigerian armed forces for their recent successes in the fight against insurgency and criminality, describing their momentum as a “springboard for national development and stability.”

However, Tinubu stressed that military victories alone cannot guarantee lasting peace. He underscored the need to tackle poverty, inequality, and social exclusion, which he described as underlying drivers of conflict across Africa.

Highlighting the importance of mediation efforts linked with economic investment, Tinubu cited recent peace agreements in the Congo as proof that dialogue backed by development can produce sustainable results.
