Putin Warns of ‘Significant’ Response to Europe’s Militarisation Amid Rising Tensions

Moscow, October 3, 2025 — Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed a “significant” response to what he described as the ongoing militarisation of Europe, warning that Moscow is closely monitoring developments and will retaliate swiftly if provoked.

Speaking amid heightened security tensions across the continent, Putin condemned what he called the “hysteria” surrounding fears of a potential Russian attack on NATO member states. He criticised European governments for escalating defence measures in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine and along NATO’s eastern borders.

“We are observing Europe’s military build-up with utmost seriousness,” Putin said. “If necessary, our response will be significant and swift.”

Relations between Russia and the European Union have sharply deteriorated since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In response, the EU has significantly increased defence spending and strengthened its military posture, particularly along NATO’s eastern flank.

Tensions have further escalated following multiple incidents involving Russian drones and aircraft in European airspace. Drones reportedly flying over Denmark, along with alleged aerial incursions into Estonia and Poland, have prompted alarm over the potential spillover of the Ukraine war into neighbouring countries.
