Abuja, Nigeria – October 13, 2025
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a nationwide two-week warning strike, affecting all public universities across Nigeria.
The Union’s National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced the industrial action on Monday during a press conference held at the University of Abuja. He stated that the decision followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued on September 28, 2025, without any meaningful response from the Federal Government or relevant stakeholders.
According to Professor Piwuna, the strike is both “total and comprehensive,” with all ASUU branches directed to fully withdraw their services beginning at midnight on Monday, October 13.
“There has been no substantial progress or commitment from the authorities to address the issues raised in our ultimatum. As such, we have no choice but to proceed with this warning strike in line with the resolution of our National Executive Council (NEC),” Piwuna said.
The union did not specify whether the strike would be extended beyond the initial two-week period but emphasized that the warning strike is a signal to authorities to take urgent action on outstanding demands, which include revitalization funding, payment of earned academic allowances, and issues related to the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), among others.
This latest action raises fresh concerns over disruptions to Nigeria’s academic calendar, as students and parents brace for another round of academic uncertainty in the country’s public universities.
