Team Nigeria Tops Medals Table as All African Para Badminton Championships 2025 Concludes in Umuahia

Umuahia, Nigeria – October 13, 2025

The 2025 edition of the All African Para Badminton Championships has officially concluded in Umuahia, Abia State, with Team Nigeria emerging as the overall winner, topping the medals table with an impressive haul of 36 medals.

Nigeria’s contingent secured 10 gold, 13 silver, and 13 bronze medals to finish first, ahead of Kenya, which claimed second place with 11 medals — 4 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze. Egypt followed in third with 8 medals, comprising 3 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze.

The championship, hosted at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, brought together para-athletes from across the African continent, representing countries including Benin Republic, Egypt, Cameroon, Mauritius, Mozambique, Tanzania, Rwanda, DR Congo, Kenya, and Burkina Faso.

Speaking at the closing ceremony on Sunday, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, described the tournament as a celebration of resilience, inclusion, and unity through sport. Represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, the governor expressed deep appreciation to the participating nations for making the event a success.

“This championship has not only showcased athletic excellence but also reinforced the spirit of unity among African nations,” Otti said. “We are proud to have hosted such a historic event here in Umuahia.”

The governor also extended gratitude to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA) for their support and partnership, adding that Abia State would be willing to host the event again in 2026.

The tournament is seen as a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to promote inclusive sports and position itself as a hub for international para-sport competitions.
