Abuja, Nigeria — October 29, 2025
Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security, Hon. Garba Muhammad, has revealed that the National Assembly has received threats from terrorist groups to bomb the legislative complex.
Muhammad made the disclosure during a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish the Legislative Security Directorate, a proposed agency designed to strengthen security operations within the National Assembly.
According to the lawmaker, the National Assembly complex has faced a series of security challenges, including car and motorcycle theft, vandalism, the use of fake identity cards, and infiltration by unregistered visitors.
He warned that the recent threat underscores the urgent need to enhance security measures to protect lawmakers, staff, and visitors to the parliament.
“We have received credible threats from terrorists who are planning to bomb the National Assembly complex,” Muhammad stated. “This is why the proposed Legislative Security Directorate is crucial. It will help fortify the complex and ensure a proactive response to emerging threats.”
The bill, currently under consideration, aims to establish a dedicated security unit responsible for intelligence gathering, access control, and rapid response within the legislative environment.
Security experts have long expressed concerns about the vulnerability of key government institutions, calling for tighter surveillance and improved coordination between security agencies.
If passed, the proposed directorate would represent a major step toward institutionalizing security within Nigeria’s legislative arm of government.
