Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, where the country reaffirmed its frontline position in global climate action and its commitment to a green transition.
The return of the Vice President was announced in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha.
At the global event, the Vice President urged the international community to recognize the economic value of nature and adopt “predictable, equitable, and accessible” funding mechanisms to protect and restore ecosystems, stressing that Nigeria’s renewed climate agenda was anchored on “a solemn national commitment to preserve the planet for future generations,” not mere ambition.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Vice President held a series of bilateral negotiations on carbon-market cooperation, with discussions focused on unlocking between 2.5 billion Dollars and 3 billion Dollars annually over the next decade.
