The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has rejected widespread claims that its operations are focused solely on arresting and prosecuting internet fraudsters, insisting that its mandate covers a broad range of financial crimes.
Speaking during a one-day capacity-building workshop for civil society organisations and journalists on cryptocurrency in Borno State, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, described the belief that the commission targets only online fraudsters as a “stubborn perception.”
He explained that the anti-graft agency has investigated and prosecuted five former governors and five former ministers, among other high-profile individuals, demonstrating that its work is not limited to cybercrime.
Oyewale, however, noted that internet fraud remains a serious concern, acknowledging its significant negative impact on Nigeria’s economy.
He reaffirmed the EFCC’s commitment to combating all forms of financial crimes, stressing that the commission will continue to pursue offenders regardless of their status or the nature of their offenses.
