A major earthquake of a 7.6 magnitude, has reportedly hit Japan’s north-eastern region.
According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, the quake occurred at a depth of 50 kilometers about 80 kilometers off the coast of the Aomori region. The agency noted that some people in the region have been injured, while trains have been suspended as a precaution.
Reacting to the earthquake, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, Minoru Kihara has said that the government will set up a response office within the prime minister’s crisis management centre and convened an emergency team to assess the damage and implement emergency disaster response measures, including rescue and relief operations.
