Uyo Residents Reflect on Christmas Significance, Note Modest Relief from Falling Food Prices

Residents of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, have shared their views on the significance of Christmas and the impact of recent reductions in the prices of some food items and household commodities.

Speaking with our correspondent, Uwakmfon-Abasi Walter, many residents described Christmas as a season of thanksgiving, love, and togetherness, offering an opportunity to reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ and reconnect with family and friends. They added that the celebration should also inspire compassion, peace, and support for the less privileged.

On the economy, residents acknowledged a noticeable drop in the prices of certain food items in major markets, describing it as a welcome relief after months of economic strain. However, some noted that despite the reduction, the overall cost of living remains high, urging the government to sustain policies that will stabilise prices and improve citizens’ purchasing power.

Meanwhile, Christmas, marked annually on December 25, is celebrated by Christians worldwide as a symbol of love, hope, sacrifice, and redemption.
