Climate Justice Advocate Calls for Faster Transition to Clean Energy

Uyo, Nigeria — A climate justice campaigner has called on governments and industry stakeholders to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy in order to protect lives, livelihoods, and the environment.

Speaking on Planet News Hour to mark the International Day of Clean Energy, climate justice advocate Lucy Eyo explained that clean energy is generated from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and hydro, which do not pollute the environment or pose long-term health risks to communities.

Eyo warned that continued reliance on fossil fuels remains a major threat to the planet, noting that its effects are already evident in rising global temperatures, flooding, and environmental degradation. She said vulnerable regions, including Nigeria and Akwa Ibom State, are already experiencing the impact of climate change.

Describing the transition to clean energy as urgent, she cautioned that delays would worsen climate-related risks and lead to significant economic losses.

She also linked this year’s theme, “Clean Energy for People and Planet,” to the need for energy solutions that protect the environment while improving human well-being, expanding access to energy, and creating sustainable jobs.

The campaigner urged governments, policymakers, and industries still dependent on fossil fuels to invest in renewable energy, enforce environmental regulations, and prioritize people-centered energy policies. According to her, continued dependence on polluting energy sources poses serious health and environmental hazards.

The International Day of Clean Energy, observed annually on January 26, was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness and mobilize action toward a just and inclusive transition to clean energy for the benefit of people and the planet.
