The Federal Government has announced plans to commence the production of 1.2 million metric tonnes of green methanol per year as part of efforts to achieve net-zero shipping emissions by 2050.
Speaking at a summit in Abuja, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, revealed that the project, tagged “Landmark Green Hydrogen,” will begin its initial phase in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, at a cost of €5.9 billion.
The summit was attended by several dignitaries, including the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff, federal lawmakers, and representatives of the International Maritime Organisation.
Nnaji emphasised the need for proactive engagement in key solutions to decarbonise the shipping industry, aligning with the International Maritime Organisation’s agenda for net-zero emissions by 2050.
