South Africa have sealed their place in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Senegal. The Banyana Banyana edged the tie 4-1 on penalties following a goalless stalemate in both regulation and extra time.
Their next challenge? A much-anticipated clash against long-time rivals Nigeria at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.
Nigeria, on their part, booked their semi-final ticket with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Zambia, extending their unbeaten run in the tournament and maintaining a clean sheet in all four matches so far. With eight goals scored and none conceded, the Super Falcons look formidable heading into Tuesday’s showdown.
This meeting reignites a fierce rivalry. The last time both teams met was in the 2022 edition, also held in Morocco, where South Africa defeated the then-defending champions 2-1—an act of redemption following their loss to Nigeria in the 2018 WAFCON final.
With the final within reach, all eyes are now on this heavyweight semi-final clash.
Meanwhile, hosts Morocco will face Ghana’s Black Queens in the other semi-final fixture, also scheduled for Tuesday.
