Police Avert Prison Disaster in Akwa Ibom After Bomb Devices Discovered at Custodial Centre

The Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom State has uncovered and safely neutralised explosive devices found within the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, in what authorities say prevented a potential major security incident.

According to a statement released on Monday in Uyo by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfom John, the operation followed credible intelligence provided by correctional authorities about suspicious items discovered around the facility.

John said the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, immediately ordered the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, BomPol Base 38, Uyo, alongside other tactical teams to secure the area and carry out a controlled operation.

Security operatives were able to safely recover and neutralise the devices, averting what officials described as an imminent threat to lives and infrastructure within the custodial centre.

Authorities have since intensified security around the facility while investigations continue to determine how the explosive devices were planted and those responsible for the attempt.
