The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the evacuation of Nigerians in Iran who wish to leave the country, facilitating their safe passage across the Armenia border amid escalating regional tensions.
The operation was confirmed by the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in a post on her X account. She stated that officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are coordinating the evacuation, ensuring that citizens who choose to leave Iran are safely escorted into Armenia.
Dabiri-Erewa reassured that, so far, no Nigerian has been harmed amid the ongoing tensions. She added that embassy personnel remain stationed at the border to provide assistance and support to evacuees.
She further explained that the evacuation, conducted in collaboration with Armenian authorities, is part of the Federal Government’s ongoing effort to protect Nigerians abroad during emergencies. She emphasized the government’s vigilance over developments in the Middle East and its commitment to ensuring the welfare and safety of citizens overseas.
The initiative underscores Nigeria’s proactive approach in safeguarding its nationals amid international crises and volatile geopolitical situations.
