The House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) has raised concerns over a potential return of fuel scarcity in Nigeria, warning that petrol queues and a spike in pump prices may be imminent if urgent measures are not taken.
Speaking at a press briefing at the National Assembly in Abuja, the committee chairman, Ikenga Ugochinyere, described the situation as a looming crisis that could further strain the economic conditions of Nigerians in the coming weeks.
He cautioned that unless key supply challenges are addressed within the next 48 hours, the country could experience widespread fuel shortages, distribution disruptions, and rising petrol prices.
Ugochinyere explained that findings from the committee’s oversight activities suggest that the anticipated price increase is not a result of deliberate government policy, but rather due to systemic inefficiencies within the fuel supply chain.
To prevent the situation from escalating, the committee called on the Presidential Technical Committee overseeing the crude-for-naira initiative to reconvene within 48 hours to resolve the identified bottlenecks.
