Liverpool’s teenage debutant, Rio Ngumoha, scored a stoppage-time winner to hand his side a thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Newcastle had dominated the early stages but fell behind in the 35th minute when Ryan Gravenberch fired Liverpool ahead against the run of play. Their frustration deepened in first-half stoppage time as Anthony Gordon was shown a red card for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk.
Seconds after the restart, Hugo Ekitike doubled Liverpool’s lead with a composed finish, leaving the hosts with a mountain to climb.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Newcastle fought back valiantly. Bruno Guimaraes pulled one back with a header in the 57th minute before William Osula struck in the 88th minute to level the match, sparking hopes of an unlikely comeback.
However, in the 100th minute, 16-year-old Ngumoha produced a fairytale moment on his debut, coolly slotting home the winner to secure back-to-back wins for Liverpool.
