2027: Why Atiku, Obi, Olawepo-Hashim, Others Want Tinubu’s Job

With the conclusion of party primaries, Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election is shaping up to be one of the most consequential and unpredictable contests since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

Amid economic hardship, persistent insecurity, rising public frustration and growing disillusionment with the political class, opposition presidential candidates are presenting themselves as alternatives to President Bola Tinubu ahead of next year’s election.

Political observers say the race is unfolding in an increasingly fluid environment, with long-standing political loyalties under pressure and traditional assumptions about region, religion and party affiliation being tested.

Unlike previous elections largely dominated by a clear two-party contest, the battle for the presidency is being shaped by opposition fragmentation, shifting alliances and competing claims to political legitimacy.

Among those seeking to unseat Tinubu are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, businessman and politician Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, and other opposition figures who argue that Nigeria needs a new direction.

The political landscape has been further complicated by divisions within the opposition. The Peoples Democratic Party is currently split into rival blocs, with one faction reportedly led by former Minister, Kabiru Turaki, backing former President Goodluck Jonathan, while another faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is supporting Senator Sandy Onor.

Both factions continue to claim legitimacy as the authentic PDP leadership, highlighting the deep divisions that could influence the outcome of the 2027 presidential race.

As campaigns gather momentum, analysts believe issues such as the economy, insecurity, governance and national unity are likely to dominate the contest, with candidates seeking to convince voters that they offer the best path forward for Nigeria.
