Nigeria’s Flamingos Reach U-17 Women’s World Cup Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s Flamingos have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after defeating Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 encounter.

Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan scored for Nigeria, while Emily Delgado pulled one back for Mexico late in stoppage time.

The Flamingos took the lead in the 40th minute after an Esther Stephen ball caused problems for the Mexican defence. Umejiaku seized the opportunity and fired into the top corner to give Nigeria a 1-0 advantage at half-time.

Nigeria continued to control the contest after the break and doubled their lead in the 71st minute. Dunstan reacted quickest after Mexico failed to fully clear a Kanyinsola Yusuf cross, smashing the ball into the net to make it 2-0.

Mexico mounted a late fightback and reduced the deficit through Delgado in the 10th minute of added time. However, the Flamingos held firm during the closing stages to secure their place in the last eight.

Goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho also played a key role in the victory, making important saves to deny Mexico, including a crucial stop from captain Citlalli Reyes early in the match. FIFA named Umejiaku Player of the Match.

The victory comes after Nigeria’s impressive 3-1 win over defending champions DPR Korea in their final group-stage match. The result ended Korea DPR’s 18-match unbeaten run in regulation time at the U-17 Women’s World Cup dating back to 2018.

Head coach Akeem Busari praised his players for their performance in the knockout stage, acknowledging the intensity and pressure involved in such matches.

The Flamingos will now face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1, with a place in the semi-finals at stake. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nigerian time at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé, Morocco.

Nigeria will be looking to reach the semi-finals for the first time since the 2022 edition in India, where the Flamingos won the bronze medal.

With their attacking quality and defensive resilience proving decisive against Mexico, the Nigerian side will now turn its attention to Venezuela as the tournament enters its decisive stage.
