LAGOS, Nigeria – The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has officially announced Lagos as the host city for the 2025 National Trials, with top foreign-based athletes including Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, Godson Brume, Udodi Onwuzurike, and Chidi Okezie expected to compete for spots on Team Nigeria ahead of upcoming international championships.
Also set to join the lineup are US-based sprinter Imaobong Nse Uko, hurdler Ezekiel Jimoh, and UK-based quarter-miler Esther Ajayi, whose recent form has turned heads in the European circuit.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, AFN President Tonobok Okowa said the decision to hold the trials in Lagos was strategic, citing the city’s readiness, high-performance facilities, and proximity to international travel routes.
“This year’s trials will be crucial in shaping our national squad for major events, including the African Games and the World Athletics Championships. We are expecting a strong showing from both home-based and foreign-based athletes,” Okowa said.
Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the 100m hurdles, is one of the biggest names expected at the trials. Her participation is seen as a morale booster for younger athletes and a signal of Nigeria’s intent to field a formidable squad.
The trials, scheduled to run from August 15 to 17 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, will serve as the final selection phase for athletes seeking to represent Nigeria on the continental and global stage. Over 300 athletes from across the federation are expected to compete in various track and field events.
According to the AFN technical committee, the trials will be conducted in line with international standards, with electronic timing and certified officials to ensure fairness and accuracy.
Okowa also noted that arrangements were being made to ensure live broadcast of the events to reach wider audiences and promote athletics development in the country.
“The goal is not just to pick a team, but to raise the profile of Nigerian athletics and inspire the next generation,” he added.
The 2025 National Trials promise thrilling action as Nigeria’s finest athletes—both local and international—go head-to-head for national glory and international representation.
