WAEC Results Under Scrutiny as Schools Raise Concerns Over Grading, CBT Glitches

The West African Examinations Council is facing growing scrutiny over the integrity of the newly released 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results for school candidates, following complaints from school administrators and education advocates over alleged grading anomalies and technical glitches associated with the expanded Computer-Based Testing rollout.

The concerns emerged after some schools reported that students who had previously demonstrated strong academic performance received lower grades than expected in the 2026 examination.

Speaking in an interview with our correspondent on Monday, the Director of Impact House Model Schools, Mowe, Ogun State, Sam Abdulazeez, said his school had observed a decline in students’ performance in the 2025 and 2026 WASSCE despite retaining its teaching staff, improving its facilities and intensifying preparations for the examination.

Abdulazeez said the school had been presenting candidates for WASSCE since 2017 and had consistently recorded strong performances, particularly in Mathematics and English Language.

The reported concerns have renewed calls for WAEC to review the results and clarify whether technical challenges associated with the transition to Computer-Based Testing may have affected candidates’ performances or grades.

Education stakeholders are also urging the examination body to provide greater transparency on its marking and result-processing systems, particularly where candidates’ results appear inconsistent with their established academic records.

The controversy comes as schools, students and parents continue to assess the 2026 WASSCE results, with affected candidates and institutions seeking clarification on what may have contributed to the reported discrepancies.
