Rabat, Morocco — Nigeria’s preparations for Thursday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon have been disrupted after Super Eagles players and officials boycotted training in protest over unpaid allowances and bonuses.
Reports confirmed that the entire squad, including members of the technical and backroom staff, refused to train on Tuesday, citing long-standing financial disputes with football authorities.
In a brief statement reportedly issued jointly by players and officials, the team acknowledged the boycott but expressed hope for a swift resolution that would allow them to resume full preparation for the decisive qualifier.
The protest comes at a critical time as the Super Eagles aim to secure an early advantage in their World Cup qualifying campaign. Officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are yet to release an official response to the players’ action.
Nigeria is scheduled to face Gabon on Thursday, with the match seen as pivotal to the team’s quest for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
