A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, has said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would suffer a decisive defeat if the 2027 elections are conducted in a free and fair manner.
Lawal, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the assertion on Wednesday, where he accused the current administration of attempting to entrench a one-party system.
“They want a one-party system. Look, it is very clear, every Nigerian understands that this government cannot afford to go to an election in a free and fair manner because they will lose woefully,” he said.
He argued that growing dissatisfaction among Nigerians over economic hardship and insecurity has eroded public confidence in the ruling party, warning that the electorate may use the 2027 polls to express their discontent.
Lawal further alleged that recent political developments and alignments suggest efforts to weaken opposition voices, stressing the need to safeguard democratic institutions and ensure electoral transparency.
His comments come amid increasing political activity and early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, with analysts pointing to the likelihood of shifting alliances and heightened competition among parties.
The APC has yet to formally respond to the remarks, though supporters of the party have continued to defend the administration’s policies and performance.
Observers say the credibility of the electoral process will remain a key factor in determining the legitimacy of the outcome as the country prepares for another electoral cycle.
