Abuja — Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is expected to resign from his cabinet position in the coming days following a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday.
According to information from his media team, Adelabu met with the president to present a comprehensive report on his stewardship of the power sector over the past two and a half years. During the meeting, the president reportedly commended him for his efforts, particularly in laying what was described as a strong policy foundation for reforms in the electricity sector.
His aide, Bolaji, said President Tinubu also granted his consent and blessing for Adelabu to pursue a governorship ambition, a development that is expected to trigger his resignation from office.
“President Tinubu commended the minister for his dedication and the progress recorded,” the statement noted, adding that the president acknowledged key steps taken under his leadership.
Adelabu reportedly highlighted several milestones during the engagement, including efforts to stabilise electricity generation, improve transmission capacity, and implement reforms aimed at boosting efficiency across the power value chain.
A major highlight of the presentation was the introduction of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), which outline long-term reforms for the sector.
With his expected exit, attention is now shifting to possible adjustments within the power ministry as the government continues its broader energy sector reform agenda.
