Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that he would not remain in office beyond a single four-year term if elected president of Nigeria.
Obi made the statement in a video snippet from an interview with News Central TV scheduled to air later today.
“I want to be a one-term president because of stability. I would not stay a day, with a gun to my head, longer than four years,” Obi said during the interview with Kayode Akintemi.
In the discussion, the former Anambra State governor argued that Nigeria needs a leader focused on wealth creation and also alleged that the ruling party has compromised the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Obi further criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu over borrowing, insecurity and food policies, claiming the country has become poorer and more insecure within the last two years.
“It’s only two years that someone used to borrow more than all the previous governments put together. It’s only two years that Nigeria has been the hungriest country in the world,” he said.
Reacting to Obi’s comments, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, dismissed the former presidential candidate’s promise.
“If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president, you’ll believe anything,” Onanuga said.
