Banks to Begin Charging N6 per SMS Transaction Alert from May 1

Starting Thursday, May 1, 2025, bank customers in Nigeria will pay N6 per SMS transaction alert, up from the previous N4. The increase follows a 50 percent hike in telecom rates recently approved by the Federal Government.

Several banks have notified customers of the adjustment via email. In one such message, Guaranty Trust Bank stated:

“This adjustment is due to a recent increase in telecom rates as communicated by the telecommunication service providers.”

Customers were also reminded of the importance of transaction alerts in monitoring account activity. The notice further stated that SMS alerts to international numbers will attract higher charges.
