The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning against the registration of underaged individuals and foreigners as the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise prepares to kick off on 8th August.
Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun State, Mutiu Agboke, gave the caution during a sensitisation visit to the palace of the Olowu of Kuta, Oba Adekunle Oyelude. He stated that such actions are clear violations of the Electoral Act and attract legal consequences.
Agboke stressed that the voter registration process is free of charge and warned against any attempt to commercialise or monetise it. He called for increased vigilance and collaboration among traditional rulers, community leaders, and civil society organisations to ensure a credible and inclusive exercise.
The Osun REC also explained that the CVR would provide an opportunity for eligible voters to register, correct mistakes from previous registrations, or transfer their voting locations. However, he warned prospective registrants against double registration, which he said remains an electoral offence.
