The Government of Mexico has formally approved the appointment of former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico, ending months of uncertainty over his diplomatic posting.
Omokri announced the development on Tuesday, saying the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, delivered the diplomatic agrément to the Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.
The agrément represents the formal consent of a receiving country to accept an ambassador nominated by another country.
According to Omokri, his appointment also carries concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, meaning he will represent Nigeria in the four countries.
President Bola Tinubu had approved Omokri’s posting to Mexico City in March 2026 as part of the deployment of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners. The nominees had earlier been confirmed by the Senate in December 2025.
However, Omokri’s posting remained pending because Mexico had not formally communicated its acceptance. In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mexico and Japan were the two countries yet to grant agrément to Nigeria’s ambassador-designates, while assuring that diplomatic engagements were ongoing.
The delay had also generated speculation that Mexico might have rejected Omokri’s nomination. The former presidential aide dismissed the reports in June, saying Mexico had not rejected his appointment and attributing the delay to diplomatic procedures and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico co-hosted with the United States and Canada.
The latest approval clears the way for Omokri to take up his diplomatic assignment, although his announcement did not specify when he would formally assume office or present his credentials to the Mexican president.
Omokri, who previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, is also known for his political commentary and public advocacy.
