Nigeria: National grid trips multiple times, now stabilised, says NISO

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) says the national grid has returned to normal operation after experiencing multiple trippings on the 330-kilovolt (kV) transmission network on Monday.

NISO said the incident occurred at about 12:40 p.m. on October 19, 2026, affecting a section of the transmission network and causing a sharp decline in electricity generation.

According to data from NISO’s electricity monitoring portal, power generation fell from about 3,840 megawatts (MW) at 7 a.m. to approximately 476.7MW by 1 p.m., a decline of more than 87 per cent.

The development resulted in reduced electricity supply in several parts of the country, with some electricity distribution companies recording little or no allocation from the grid.

In a statement, NISO said it worked with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to immediately implement corrective measures aimed at stabilising the system and restoring normal operations.

“Restoration efforts have been successfully completed, and the national grid has returned to normal operation,” the operator said.

NISO, however, clarified that the incident did not constitute a nationwide grid collapse, stressing that the disturbance affected only a section of the transmission network.

The operator urged Nigerians to disregard unverified reports concerning the status of the national grid and rely on official NISO communication channels for accurate updates.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over the stability of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure, coming amid recurring disruptions that have affected power supply to homes and businesses across the country.

NISO said it remains committed to maintaining grid stability, ensuring reliable operation of the national electricity transmission system and providing timely information to the public.
