Obi, Kwankwaso Backers Launch New Pressure Group Ahead of ADC Primaries

Supporters of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and ex-Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have unveiled a new political pressure group, the Obi–Kwankwaso Movement, as political permutations intensify ahead of the presidential primaries of the African Democratic Congress.

The group announced its formation on Monday in Abuja, stating that it has already established structures across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. According to its promoters, state and zonal coordinators have also been appointed to spearhead mobilisation efforts nationwide.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the movement’s National Publicity Secretary, Justin Ijeh, described the initiative as a broad coalition of political forces. He said it brings together elements of the Obidient Movement, Kwankwasiyya, the New Nigeria People’s Party, and the African Democratic Congress.

The emergence of the group points to a fresh phase of realignment within opposition ranks, as stakeholders position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections. It also underscores growing uncertainty over which aspirant will ultimately secure the ADC presidential ticket.

Political observers say the development could influence the dynamics of the party’s primaries, as alliances and grassroots mobilisation efforts continue to take shape in the lead-up to the contest.
