President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate deployment of about 100,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits nationwide as part of efforts to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices on Nigerian commuters.
The directive comes amid concerns over the global energy market following tensions in the Middle East, including the Israel–Iran conflict, which has contributed to increases in the cost of petrol and diesel.
The Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), Ismaeel Ahmed, disclosed the President’s directive while briefing journalists at the State House in Abuja.
Ahmed said the President is closely monitoring global developments and their potential impact on Nigeria’s energy costs, particularly the effect of the Middle East crisis on transportation and fuel prices.
According to him, Tinubu has instructed the Pi-CNG initiative to accelerate the nationwide rollout of CNG infrastructure and alternative mobility solutions to reduce dependence on petrol.
He explained that the conversion kits would be distributed through collaboration between the government and key stakeholders, enabling vehicle owners—including commercial transport operators and tricycle riders—to convert their engines to run on compressed natural gas.
Ahmed noted that the initiative is aimed at lowering transportation costs for Nigerians while promoting the adoption of cleaner and more affordable energy sources in the country’s transport sector.
The deployment of the conversion kits forms part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to expand the use of CNG as an alternative fuel and reduce the economic burden of fluctuating global oil prices on citizens.
