ABUJA, NIGERIA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has demanded the immediate resignation or removal of Professor Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the electoral body of partisanship and undermining Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, ADC National Chairman David Mark said the party had completely lost confidence in INEC, describing the commission’s recent actions as unlawful and a direct assault on democratic principles.
Mark alleged that INEC had taken sides in an internal party dispute and acted in contempt of a Court of Appeal ruling by withdrawing recognition of the ADC’s leadership.
He also accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of pursuing a broader agenda to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections, claiming the move was intended to create a political environment in which the ruling party emerges as the only viable option, despite rising insecurity and economic challenges across the country.
Mark urged Nigerians to resist any attempt to impose a one-party state and emphasized that the ADC would continue its political activities regardless of INEC’s actions.
