Coup Plot Thickens as Defendants Allegedly Admit Targeting Tinubu in Court

The Federal Government has presented video evidence before the Federal High Court in Abuja in an effort to establish an alleged plot to overthrow the administration of Bola Tinubu.

The video recordings, tendered during proceedings, reportedly show some of the defendants explaining their level of involvement in the alleged coup plot to investigators.

The defendants in the case, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/206/2026, include retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana; retired Naval Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor; serving Police Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim; as well as Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Kashim Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani.

Also mentioned in the charge is former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, who is reportedly at large after allegedly leaving the country prior to the exposure of the plot.

According to the charge filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the defendants are facing allegations including treason, terrorism, failure to disclose security intelligence, and money laundering in furtherance of terrorist acts.

At the resumed hearing on Monday, the prosecution played a video clip in court showing two of the defendants—retired Naval Captain Victor and Inspector Ibrahim—allegedly admitting that they were aware of the planned coup.

However, the first defendant, retired Major General Gana, denied any knowledge of the plot.

In the video, Gana stated that he retired from the Nigerian Army in 2010 as Chief of Defence Logistics and had since lived a quiet life. He maintained that he had never been involved in any act of indiscipline or criminal activity.

He, however, acknowledged knowing the alleged coordinator of the plot, identified as Colonel M. A. Ma’aji.

The case continues as the court reviews the evidence presented, with further proceedings expected in the coming days.
