Reps Committee Raises National Institute of Sports Budget to N60bn

The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has increased the proposed 2026 budget of the National Institute of Sports (NIS) from N2.8 billion to about N60 billion.

Chairman of the Committee, Kabiru Ahmadu, disclosed the development, explaining that the decision followed extensive consultations between the committee, the management of the institute, and the leadership of the Budget Office of the Federation.

Ahmadu said the upward review was necessary to enable the institute to fully implement its programmes and sustain ongoing reforms. He commended the leadership of the NIS for introducing innovations that have repositioned the institute and improved its performance.

According to him, the new Director-General of the Institute, Philip Shuaibu, has significantly turned around the fortunes of the organisation by expanding its operations and strengthening its activities.

The committee chairman noted that despite the non-release of capital funds for the 2025 fiscal year, the institute was still able to record notable achievements, underscoring the need for adequate budgetary allocation to consolidate the gains made so far.
