INEC Chairman Urges Security Agencies to Tackle Vote Buying Ahead of FCT Elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and the Nigerian Police to intensify efforts to curb vote buying and vote trading across the country.

Professor Amupitan made the call while receiving a delegation from the National Peace Committee, stressing the need for law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies to remain vigilant in the lead-up to the February 21, 2026, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections.

Reaffirming INEC’s commitment to ensuring credible polls, the Chairman disclosed that relevant security and anti-corruption agencies have already been placed on alert to address any attempts to compromise the electoral process.

He noted that the Commission would take immediate action based on security intelligence and risk assessments presented by the National Peace Committee. According to him, the information provided by the Committee was both timely and valuable.

Professor Amupitan added that the intelligence would be carefully reviewed and shared with appropriate security agencies to ensure necessary preventive measures are implemented ahead of the elections.

The FCT Area Council Elections are scheduled to hold on February 21, 2026.
