Senate Approves ₦50m for Families of Security Personnel Killed in Oyo Rescue Operation

The Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation to the families of five security and civilian personnel who lost their lives during the rescue operation that secured the release of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The intervention comes a day after the upper chamber paid tribute to the fallen personnel, commending their professionalism, courage and the improved inter-agency collaboration that led to the successful rescue of the victims.

The victims were among those involved in the operation that secured the release of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers, who were abducted on May 15 during an attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area.

Announcing the resolution, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the financial support was approved to assist the bereaved families, with particular attention to the welfare of children left behind by the deceased.

He directed that each of the five affected families receive ₦10 million, bringing the total donation approved by the Senate to ₦50 million.

The Senate said the gesture was in recognition of the sacrifices made by the fallen personnel in the line of duty and reaffirmed its support for security agencies working to combat insecurity across the country.
